Canyon in Madeira
Córrego da Beira do Lombo Queimado (inferior)
Intermediate · v3a2 III
Rappels: 15 · Max waterfall: 26 m · Min rope: 20 m
This lower section is the most beautiful part of the Beira do Lombo Queimado system even though it has no big waterfall. It is an undervalued canyon, held back only by its awkward access, but extremely aesthetic, with deep crystal-clear pools and highly interesting rock formations: thoroughly recommended. Done in combination with the upper part, especially in sunshine, it is a feast for the eyes.
Current status
As of June 2026The northern levada still takes all the upper water, but after very few waterfalls the flow is very good again. The anchors are in good order, with no problems at any rappel; flow was normal and anchors fine at the end of April 2026 as well.
Season and flow
The Levada do Norte captures the water of the upper section, so the canyon starts dry, but after the first rappel, or at most a very few waterfalls, it becomes very aquatic again. Flow has been normal/weak in January 2019, OK in June 2023, medium-low in October 2025, strong in late April 2026, normal at the end of April 2026 and very good in early June 2026.
Anchors and re-equipment
The anchors are in good condition and exactly where expected, all in place and all doubled (confirmed in January 2019, June 2023, October 2025 and April 2026).
Access and exit
Combination and exit. It is most often done together with the upper section; upper plus lower takes about 4 h. At the end, once in the Ribeira da Hortelã, use the right-bank anchors that lead to the water intake for the Ribeira do Seixal; from there the exit is via Lombo Barbinhas.
Official notes
Some of the short rappels have only a single hanger.
Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
