Canyon in Madeira

Córrego da Rocha Branca

Extreme · v5a1 II

Rappels: 13 · Max waterfall: 150 m · Min rope: 60 m

A little-frequented São Vicente canyon with a 150 m main waterfall, whose condition was last confirmed in October 2018.

Current status

As of October 2018

Anchors degraded or missing; treat this as an unequipped, exploratory canyon; best after rain, when it carries water. Conditions have not been confirmed since October 2018.

Season and flow

Water flow and character. After rain water runs throughout the whole canyon, and in those conditions it is an interesting canyon: it is at its best after a wet spell (as in October 2018).

Anchors and re-equipment

As of October 2018 all the anchors were degraded and some no longer existed at all. The descent had to be carried out in exploration mode, and the in-place equipment is insufficient for a subsequent descent: expect to bring and place your own anchors and rigging.

Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
