Canyon in Madeira

Córrego do Inferno

Beginner · v2a2 I

Max waterfall: 17 m · Min rope: 20 m

A recently opened, pleasant and very pretty beginners' canyon: agreeable, good for initiation, and very beautiful for its grade.

Current status

As of February 2022

Doable after heavy rain; access hard to find in dense vegetation (a sign is now in place); all anchors present but maillons missing on the last rappel; numerous logs in the bed, all passable. Conditions have not been confirmed since February 2022.

Season and flow

Weak but always running; it can also be done after a heavy rain episode, as in February 2022.

Anchors and re-equipment

At R6 the maillons were stolen in early 2022, though the hangers were left in place. As of February 2022 all anchor points are in place, but the links (maillons) are missing on the last rappel: carry spare maillons.

Access and exit

Access and obstacles. The access trail is hard to find because the vegetation is very dense; a sign has been installed to help, and there may be an easier way in. Many tree trunks and obstacles lie along the stream bed, but nothing impassable.

Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
