Canyon in Madeira

Ribeira da Laje

Advanced · v4a1 III

Rappels: 17 · Max waterfall: 80 m · Min rope: 60 m

Ribeira da Laje is a long, 17-rappel Porto Moniz canyon with an 80 m big drop. Detailed, up-to-date information on it is thin.

Current status

As of September 2014

The canyon was re-bolted in August 2014 with most damaged anchors replaced, some rappels left with un-doubled anchors, and low water. Nothing more recent is known, so current anchor and access conditions should be checked carefully before a descent.

Season and flow

In August 2014 the flow was weak.

Anchors and re-equipment

The canyon was re-equipped on 19 August 2014. Many of the anchors had been destroyed and almost all of them were replaced during that descent, but on some rappels the equipment was not doubled, so single-bolt stations may remain: be prepared to back up or add hardware.

Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
