Canyon in Madeira

Ribeira da Galinhaça

Beginner · v2a1 III

Rappels: 21 · Max waterfall: 35 m · Min rope: 26 m

A long, low-difficulty route of 21 rappels in Porto Moniz. The flow is usually very low, although in February the canyon can carry water throughout. The descent presents no major problems and there are always well-placed trees to rappel from.

Current status

As of February 2018

Water flowing throughout, slings on some trees, R17 single-point anchors, moss may conceal bolts.

Anchors and re-equipment

Since February 2018 some trees carry ropes with maillons, while other rappels continue to be done directly off trees. At R17 both the handrail and the rappel anchor are single points. Some bolted anchors are easy to miss because moss growing on the rock can hide the hangers.

Official notes

This canyon has a very low flow almost all year. Many rappels are done directly from well-placed trees.

Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
