Canyon in Madeira

Ribeiro Magro

Advanced · v4a2 IV

Rappels: 20 · Max waterfall: 60 m · Min rope: 60 m

Little detailed information is available for this canyon beyond its technical data. It is an unequipped canyon in Porto Moniz that has only ever been descended in exploration mode, so anchors must be built on the spot: 20 rappels over 1000 m of descent from 900 m to 480 m, with a 60 m highest waterfall requiring two 60 m ropes. The approach is short (about 20 min) and the descent takes around 3 h 30 min, but the return is notably long at a further 3 h 30 min, which is what gives the canyon its exit-commitment grade of IV. Nothing has been published about water behaviour through the seasons or the details of the access and exit routes.

Official notes

The canyon is not equipped; it has only been descended in exploration mode.

Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
